Sony SLV-585HF High Failure Item

by Bill Wilde
(Denver, CO)

Angel Gonzalez (owner of awesome-consumer-electronics-repair-tips.com) referred me to http://www.fixer.com/dbase/sony/slv585hfs5.shtml which described my problem and the fix.

The problem is that Sony's original lubricant on the "half load arm" pivot dries out and sticks. This arm pivots on a post against spring force and helps position the tape during loading and unloading.

When sticky the arm cannot retract to get out of the way of the tape as it goes back into the cassette. A tiny nut (4.5 mm) on top of the post secures the arm.

A nut driver or socket this size is not common but can be found at a specialty tool store (or possibly even a hardware store).

I used a solvent and a wood toothpick to clean the pivot hole in the arm and the post. I used light machine oil and reassembled. The arm then worked freely and the VCR worked properly again.
Thanks Angel and fixer.com
